The frock of contention

Nevermind the model’s stupidity, let’s get down to business.
This dress, you see, has been the matter of discussion in the endless battle of sexes.
While I consider it one of my favourite dresses (A. it legitimately makes me feel like a 5 y/o; B. it’s fun & comfy C. it’s a neat shade of purple-ish blue) every single male friend of mine considers it the most hideous piece of clothing Hennes&Mauritz ever conceived.
Comments go from “That’s the unsexiest thing I’ve ever seen” to “My octogenarian grandmother wouldn’t like to be found dead in that thing.”
(For the record, my friend owns the same dress (we managed to never wear it together so far, ok?) and she told me her male co-workers had the same reaction.)

Now- far from me to stop wearing it, I love it, I’m comfortable enough in my skin and I don’t care that much about pleasing others let alone men; but in my long state of single-ness -oh god, am I about to have my first Carrie Bradshaw moment?- “I couldn’t help but wonder”
Is it really that bad/age inappropriate?
Do men really think women should wear miniskirts and 12” heel 24/7 to be decent?
(Maybe) Does this applies to Italian men alone?

I’d like to hear your opinion. Human being of the male species, you above all, step forward.

Last minute udon.

I spent the whole morming outside on christmas errands, we’re still covered in snow, my wardrobe doesn’t really agree with the craziness of climate; Dr. Martins from my first year in high school are stored somewhere in the garage; long story short, I came home shivering from head to toe. I needed something steaming hot to make peace with the rest of the world.
My mind went swiftly to the japanese groceries my parents brought me from their last trip and now stocked in my cupboard, it was time to give udon a try.

Ça va sans dire I had to improvise a little on some ingredients:
(2 servings)

15 shrimps
2 carrots
4 mushrooms
1 tsp sesame oil
50 cl dashi stock
5   cl soy sauce
5   cl mirin
udon to taste
chili, grated

Method:
In a pot I brought water to a boil to cook udon (mine said it took 8 min to cook, check yours, it’s important not to overcook them), you’ll also need more boiling water if you need to make dashi out of powder (like I did); in the meantime I heated sesame oil in a wok and put the vegetables first and shrimps later to sauté (I like my carrots to be still crunchy, so it takes a few minutes).
Then add dashi stock, mirin and soy sauce and let it boil for 5 min. When udon are done rinse them under cold water to stop the cooking.

Add udon in the wok and serve. I didn’t have shichimi togarashi, so I put some grated chili on top.
Voilà. Heartwarming.

This blog has started awfully serious. Time for a much lighter note.
We’re getting close to christmas, it’s time to get crafty! I’m a firm believer that an handmade present is 10 times more heartfelt than any other gift money can buy. And please let’s gloss over the fact that my wallet is a firm believer that I’m effectively skint.
So! It’s the boys’ turn!
I admit it, I’m going to make one for my self too. I’ll probably show more details soon, I’ll keep you guessing for the time being :d
I’ve bought also some fabulous yarn, this is probably going to the ladies!

I wonder if this ever occurs in any other state that calls itself civilized.

This is what happened today during voting. What it makes thoroughly even worse is that a deputy has the guts to try to shut cameras down.

311 to 314.
We lost 311 to 3- effing-14.
3 stinking votes. It’s a sad day for democracy- it’s been said that Mr. Berlusconi openly tried to bribe members of the Middle Party to join his ranks, and it’s even sadder that noboby seems to make much of a fuss about it. It’s a sign that our morality has changed already.
It’s sad because as much as Forza Italia is crowing over victory tomorrow they’ll have to start ruling this country with a majority of three votes on Opposition.
From the interviews I’ve watched they relying on some surprise: Fate, Providence, or some trick, it is not for us to know. I sense that nothing will come.
Meanwhile people outside are in a riot. Petards, varnish, eggs and burning cars are decorating Rome instead of the usual christmas decorations; injured dissidents, protesting students and a militarized city are the symbol of a malaise that won’t go away in the present conditions.

A big day ahead.

Or, in spite of what I say I still love my country.

I’m quite aware we, and by that I mean Italy, are the laughing stock. My foreign friends told me so quite a lot of times. You think we’re funny, I think we’re depressing.

I keep holdimg my breath for next monday-
Everybody understood this country’s not going anywhere but our government. We’ve been living on the edge of collapse for months and on monday the Chamber of Deputies will decide if the current government still holds the majority. I cannot help myself but hoping they won’t, it’d be about time.

They haven’t done anything for the country if they’ve not worsened things. They spent the summer throwing mud and calling each other a traitor. They’re dragging this feeble, pathetic, incompetent term of office forever just to keep their chairs. Our Prime Minister doesn’t get that the State does not exist to serve his needs nor that his fellow party members can share different opinion to his.

I hope monday they’ll pull the plug. It will be just the first step though.

We’ll have to vote then. Using an ineffective voting system designed (by guess who? same unfamous party, different term of office) to secure the power to those who like Forza Italia can gather all the centre-right wing votes. Because our left party is so battered and fragmented. And this leads to the next difficult step: provided that we go to elections again, will the left party have the chance to gather under a strong leader? Is there any such person? Will Italians not fool themselves again by voting mr. Berlusconi?

But also a big questions is: do we have the time and luxury to set elections, vote and form a new government while the State demands immediate actions, since nothing has been done to prevent it from social collapse?

A place to call my own.

Or the triumph of the Ego, if you want.

My other Tumblr wasn’t enough anymore and I’ve created a dichotomy in my tumbling, the first will always be a place for others’s stuff, this is for mine.

I’ve been umming and ahhing about starting to blog again for ages, so very typically me. I needed somewhere to vent my thoughts, something more than the 160 characters offered by twitter or the familiar gossiping that is facebook. A place where I speak my mind about life, art, politics, femminism, science, food and more politics. Expect a lot of angry frustration regarding politics, I’m Italian and a leftie afterall, which is a most unfortunate combination. Also a place to showcase more photos than I do on Flickr. I’m starting to feel the pressure of the number of my followers and I never post more than a photo of the same subject. This penalizes me mostly on band photography and on my… cat. Because I do still have some shame left and I don’t post all the photos I take of my cat, Zissou. I know, crazy cat lady in the making.
But I digress.

This little place is an exciting start for me, but I’m not sure if it’ll be the same for you.
I just hope you’ll be patient enough to stick around.

So. Moh-lèh-coh-lah.  Italian for molecule.
The tiniest little thing in the universe that still holds its properties.
An invite to stay true to oneself.

x,

S.
